Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batter Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed for a golden duck in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday, May 17. The left-handed opener was trapped LBW by Nuwan Thusara following an inswinging yorker in the first over.

Padikkal, returning to the playing XI after a prolonged absence, replaced Quinton de Kock. He has struggled in LSG colors since his switch from the Rajasthan Royals (RR) during the off season. His first five appearances for the franchise resulted in single-digit scores, with his last match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) yielding just 13 runs off 19 deliveries in a daunting run chase.

With LSG all but out of the playoff race, Padikkal was given another chance to showcase his ability. However, he was met with a brilliant delivery upfront. After being trapped in front, he went over to skipper KL Rahul to plead his case for a review.

“The DRS lasted longer than him,” one fan tweeted. Another tweet read, “Waste of a season for Padikkal”, while a third pointed out, “RCB fans once hyped Padikkal”.

Devdutt Padikkal Ends His Horrid Season with 38 Runs in Seven Matches

Devdutt Padikkal came into IPL 2024 on the back of a resurgent domestic season, even earning a Test cap. His move to LSG was expected to revive his IPL career after a rather forgettable stint with RR. Batting at No. 3 for his new team, Padikkal failed to find any rhythm or groove, irrespective of the conditions or the match situation.

He managed to score double figures only once this season. Apart from that, he finished with a strike rate of over 100 on only one occasion, resulting in a dismal overall strike rate of 73.08.

Padikkal’s dismissal led to yet another poor start for LSG in IPL 2024. The side managed to post 49 runs in the powerplay phase, losing Stoinis’ wicket off the last ball of the sixth over.

Fans were critical of the batter’s horrid season on social media. Here are some of the reactions:

  • “The DRS lasted longer than him,” one fan tweeted.
  • “Waste of a season for Padikkal,” read another tweet.
  • “RCB fans once hyped Padikkal,” another tweet noted.

Padikkal’s season ended much like it began – with a duck. Now, LSG will need to look at alternative strategies as they continue their IPL 2024 campaign.
