Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Deepak Chahar is notably absent from the playing XI in today’s crucial IPL 2024 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). This high-stakes game is taking place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, May 18.
Deepak Chahar last appeared for CSK during their home game against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 1. In that match, Chahar sustained a hamstring injury while bowling his first over, forcing him to leave the field. The severity of the injury was later confirmed by CSK’s head coach, and Chahar has not played since.
CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed Chahar’s ongoing absence, noting only one forced change in the lineup: “We’ll bowl first. The wicket looks good, conditions are overcast, and we will look to make the most of the movement in the first 2-3 overs. It looks a bit damp, but we’ll go with great intent. Every game in the IPL is must-win; nothing changes for us. Just one change – Moeen isn’t available, Santner replaces him,” Gaikwad said after losing the toss.
Although Chahar has not been ruled out of the tournament, he isn’t fit enough to play in today’s final league match. He has been seen bowling in the nets and could potentially return for the playoffs if CSK qualifies.
Deepak Chahar’s Performance in IPL 2024
Chahar’s campaign this season has been less than stellar. Known for his swing in the powerplay, Chahar has struggled to make an impact, which is reflected in his stats. Over eight matches, he has taken only five wickets, averaging 40.40 with an economy rate of 8.60. Notably, he has managed just one wicket in his last four appearances.
As fans and analysts speculate about his possible return, the key question remains: will Chahar recover in time to bolster CSK’s playoff ambitions?
