Reports suggest that this might be Rohit Sharma’s last season with MI. If true, the management will need to build a new core ahead of the mega auction later this year. Here are five players MI should consider retaining:
#5 Gerald Coetzee
Gerald Coetzee’s emergence was a rare bright spot for MI during their dismal 2024 season. After making an impact for South Africa in the 2023 World Cup, Coetzee impressed in the IPL with his pace and ability to trouble batsmen. Although his economy rate needs improvement, his 13 wickets in 10 matches make him a valuable asset. As a wicket-taking bowler, he could serve MI well in the future.

At just 21, Tilak Varma showcased his potential to become a future all-format player for India. Despite MI’s struggles, Varma was a consistent performer, scoring 416 runs in 13 games. His ability to adapt to game situations and handle pressure makes him a prime candidate for retention.
#3 Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav remains the No. 1 T20I batsman, despite a challenging IPL season. After missing the initial games due to injury and returning with a golden duck, SKY found his form, scoring 345 runs in 11 matches. His spectacular century against Sunrisers Hyderabad highlighted his immense talent. Given his proven credentials, MI is unlikely to let go of him.
#2 Hardik Pandya
Although Hardik Pandya had a tough season, his potential as an IPL-winning captain cannot be overlooked. Despite scoring only 216 runs and taking 11 wickets, Pandya’s leadership qualities and previous successes suggest that MI will likely give him more time to make an impact as captain.
#1 Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah is undeniably the first player MI should retain. Regarded as the best all-format bowler in the world, Bumrah took 20 wickets in the tournament, often delivering outstanding performances despite the team’s overall struggles. His unparalleled skill with the ball in any phase of the game makes him invaluable. Additionally, Bumrah could be considered for a future captaincy role if Hardik fails to revive the team’s fortunes.
Bumrah’s absence in the final game against Lucknow Super Giants was likely a precaution for the T20 World Cup, underscoring his importance to both MI and the national team.
