England all-rounder Liam Livingstone has reportedly been appointed as the captain for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, set to begin on Thursday, October 31. Regular white-ball skipper Jos Buttler, still recovering from a calf injury, is expected to join the squad later for the five-match T20I series, commencing on November 10.

Buttler’s last competitive appearance was in England’s 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final loss to India in June. He initially picked up the calf injury while preparing for The Hundred with Northern Superchargers, ruling him out of that tournament and England’s entire home white-ball series against Australia. His recovery has faced multiple setbacks, forcing England to seek alternative leadership options.

In Buttler’s previous absence, Harry Brook and Phil Salt captained England’s ODI and T20I teams, respectively. However, with Brook unavailable due to England’s concurrent Test series against Pakistan and New Zealand, Livingstone has been chosen over Salt. According to The Telegraph, the decision was influenced by Salt’s recent form struggles, as he has only managed one fifty in his last 17 ODI innings. In contrast, Livingstone has had a stellar season, including a prolific home series against Australia, which saw him rise to the No.1 T20I all-rounder ranking.

Livingstone’s leadership credentials include captaining Lancashire in 2018 and leading the team to the T20 Blast quarter-finals in 2023. His appointment as skipper could bolster his chances of making England’s 2025 Champions Trophy squad.

Michael Pepper Named Buttler’s Replacement for West Indies ODIs

England have announced a 14-man squad for the West Indies tour, with two more players expected to join from the Test squad currently engaged in Pakistan. With Buttler sidelined, 26-year-old Essex wicketkeeper-batter Michael Pepper has earned his maiden call-up for the ODI series. Pepper enjoyed a breakout season in the Vitality T20 Blast, amassing 535 runs at a stunning strike rate of 193.84.

Uncapped players Jafer Chohan, Dan Mousley, and John Turner have also been included, as England look to experiment with their squad before Brendon McCullum takes over as the white-ball coach in January.
