Former England captain Eoin Morgan has tipped Team India as the top contender for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup, set to be hosted in the West Indies and the USA starting June 1. Morgan emphasized India’s remarkable strength and depth, asserting that they remain the strongest side despite injury setbacks.
During a panel discussion on Sky Sports alongside former cricketers Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton, Morgan said:
“For me, the strongest side even with injuries throughout the tournament is India without a doubt. The strength and depth is absolutely incredible at the moment. We are talking about the players who missed out in the squad of 15 because of the quality they possess.”
He added:
“They are favorites for me. The quality that they have on paper if they produce it, I think they can beat anybody in the tournament.”
It’s noteworthy that India last clinched the T20 World Cup title in the inaugural edition in 2007, under the leadership of MS Dhoni. The young Indian side triumphed over arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs in Johannesburg to lift the trophy.
Since that historic victory, India has faced a series of disappointments in subsequent T20 World Cups. In the last edition held in Australia, India crashed out in the semi-finals, losing to eventual champions England by 10 wickets.
First Batch of Indian Cricketers Land in New York for 2024 T20 World Cup
Several Team India players who were not involved in the IPL 2024 playoffs have already arrived in New York, USA, to prepare for the 2024 T20 World Cup. This group includes skipper Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and the returning wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.
India will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5.
With a blend of seasoned stars and promising talent, India’s squad looks formidable on paper, setting high expectations for their performance in the tournament. The anticipation builds as fans and pundits alike wait to see if Morgan’s prediction holds true.
