Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) hammered SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in the IPL 2024 final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, May 26. In a thoroughly dominating performance, KKR bowled out SRH for 113 in 18.3 overs after losing the toss. In the chase, they got home in just 10.3 overs.

Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc was brilliant for Kolkata Knight Riders with the ball, registering figures of 2-14 from his three overs. Andre Russell starred with 3-19 from 2.3 overs, while Harshit Rana chipped in with 2-24. In reply, Venkatesh Iyer hammered 52* off 26 balls, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz contributed 39 off 32.

Following the triumph, Kolkata Knight Riders lifted the IPL title for the third time. As Shreyas Iyer and company bask in the glory of their latest victory, we take a look at the complete list of IPL titles won by each franchise.

Mumbai Indians (MI) – 5 Titles

Mumbai Indians may have finished last in the IPL 2024 points table, but they remain the joint-most successful franchise in the history of the tournament, having lifted the coveted trophy five times. MI won the IPL for the first time in 2013. They subsequently went on to register wins in 2015, 2017, 2019, and defended their crown by clinching the 2020 edition.

All of Mumbai Indians’ five triumphs have come under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. They finished 10th in the 2022 season and made the playoffs last year, but could not go all the way. Mumbai Indians were also runners-up in 2010. Apart from winning the IPL, they also won the Champions League Twenty20 twice, in 2011 and 2013.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – 5 Titles

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) joined Mumbai Indians with five IPL title wins when they won the crown in 2023. One of the most consistent franchises in the history of the T20 league, CSK won the IPL for the first time in 2010 and defended their crown in 2011. Their three subsequent triumphs came in 2018, 2021, and 2023.

Chennai’s victory in 2018 was amazing as they were returning to the IPL after a two-year suspension. Their win in 2021 was also incredible as they finished seventh out of eight teams the previous year. Similarly, they won in 2023 after finishing ninth out of 10 teams in 2022.

CSK have featured in the IPL final a record 10 times and have also clinched the Champions League Twenty20 twice, in 2010 and 2014.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – 3 Titles

Kolkata Knight Riders are the third most successful franchise in the history of the IPL, lifting the trophy three times. KKR won the IPL for the first time in 2012 and repeated the feat in 2014. After a decade-long wait, they clinched their third IPL crown in 2024. KKR also finished runners-up in 2021.

Gautam Gambhir was the captain when Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL for the first two times in 2012 and 2014. The former India opener served as the mentor of the side that won the title this season. KKR made it to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons from 2016 to 2018 but fell short of clinching the title.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) – 1 Title

Led by the late Shane Warne, Rajasthan Royals (RR) won the inaugural season of the IPL back in 2008. RR lifted the crown by beating Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final by three wickets at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.

Under Sanju Samson, Rajasthan Royals reached the final in 2022, but went down to Gujarat Titans (GT) in the summit clash. They reached the playoffs in 2024 but lost to SunRisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2. RR also finished runners-up in the 2013 Champions League Twenty20.

Deccan Chargers (DC) – 1 Title

The now-defunct Deccan Chargers (DC) franchise won the second edition of the IPL, which was held in South Africa in 2009. Deccan Chargers beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by six runs in the final held in Johannesburg. The Chargers were led by Adam Gilchrist and the side featured stars like Herschelle Gibbs, the late Andrew Symonds, and future India captain Rohit Sharma.

Deccan Chargers featured in the IPL from 2008 to 2012. While they won the title in 2009, they were eliminated in the group stage in all the other editions of the T20 league that they featured in.

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) – 1 Title

SunRisers Hyderabad, who made their IPL debut in the 2013 season, won the tournament in 2016. Led by David Warner, they beat RCB by eight runs in a high-scoring final at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Batting first, SRH posted 208-7 on the board and then held RCB to 200-7.

SRH finished runners-up in 2018, going down to Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets. After three poor seasons from 2021 to 2023, they made a strong comeback to reach the finals this year. However, like in 2018, they were hammered by eight wickets, this time by KKR.

Gujarat Titans (GT) – 1 Title

Led by Hardik Pandya, Gujarat Titans won the IPL during their maiden appearance in the tournament in 2022. They beat Rajasthan Royals in a low-scoring final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad by three wickets.

GT reached the final in the 2023 season as well but went down to CSK by five wickets [DLS method] in a thrilling last-ball finish at the Narendra Modi Stadium. With Pandya moving to MI for the 2024 season, GT were led by Shubman Gill. They failed to make the playoffs, finishing in eighth position in the points table.

Note: Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants are yet to win the Indian Premier League.
