Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan expressed his belief that Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja should have clinched more ICC trophies during their illustrious careers. The veteran trio announced their retirements from the T20I format following India’s triumphant win at the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados.

Vaughan highlighted Rohit Sharma’s long journey, noting his participation in the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007 and how he had to wait 17 years to secure another title in the same tournament. Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Vaughan remarked:

“They’ll all agree that it is a perfect way to go, but they should have won more white-ball trophies amongst them. To think that he (Rohit) has taken another seventeen years to get another one in his hand, I think he will be the first one to admit that they should have won one or two more.”

Vaughan also praised Rohit Sharma, predicting that he will be remembered as one of the best T20 batters and a remarkable leader. He expressed surprise at the Mumbai Indians’ decision to move on from Rohit’s leadership despite his impressive track record.

Indian Cricket Has Enough Talent to Replace Legends: Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan is confident that Indian cricket will not struggle to fill the void left by the departures of Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja from T20Is. He suggested that these players could continue to contribute in longer formats and the IPL, much like MS Dhoni. Vaughan stated:

“What a way to go out with a win in Barbados and a trophy in your hand. Now they can sit back and play Test cricket, a bit of one-day cricket and in the IPL like MS Dhoni, play on forever. In Indian cricket, they will be replaced as there’s plenty of talent in that team.”

The T20 World Cup victory ended India’s 11-year drought for an ICC trophy. It marked the third ICC white-ball trophy for Rohit and Kohli and the second for Jadeja.

As these cricketing giants step away from the T20I format, fans will celebrate their legacies while looking forward to the emergence of new talent in Indian cricket.
